Hello and welcome!
My name is Alyssa (this is me with a tiny cake I made).
I live here, in Johannesburg, South Africa, which is the greatest city in the world.
I work as a lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I am also a PhD candidate in Linguistics. This means that when I’m not cooking, eating, or thinking about cooking and eating, I’m playing with word lists and sound systems and other fun language-y stuff.
Along with recipes, the aim of this blog is to explore and celebrate everything to do with food: its history, its politics, its role in culture and identity, and just how darn nice it is to make and devour. As the name of the blog suggests, I have a particular penchant for cardamom, so you can expect to see a lot of that here. You can also expect to see a lot of stuff influenced by my eclectic (and eccentric) Spanish/Greek/British/Egyptian heritage and my South African upbringing.
I hope you enjoy it! If you do, you can also follow along on Instagram @needsmorecardamom!
Note: the artwork in my header image and logo was done by my talented sister!
